Friendly to the environment

As one of the world leaders in the market of air conditioning for railroad vehicles and being sensitized with the protection and respect for the environment, Merak is working on new alternative refrigerants in order to help reach the aims defined in the Kyoto Protocol.

In this respect, Merak has developed a HVAC prototype using the natural refrigerant R744. The system has been tested successfully at Merak's thermodynamic laboratory facilities, and validated with satisfactory performances.

Other alternatives are being analyzed by Merak, in order to respond to all needs of the market.

Heat Pump

Reducing energy costs

With Merak's optional heat pump technology - which uses the cooling circuit for heating purposes within certain temperature ranges - energy consumption of a passenger carriage, for example, can be reduced by up to 30%. Although there are additional costs for the enlarged heat exchanger and components for the logistic control valves, an icing sensor and a refrigerant fluid container, the high energy savings mean the costs can be recouped within a short period of time.

This technology has been in use for more than 20 years and hundreds of units have been equipped with this energy saving device.
